His uncle James Critz was his major. Her mother was Susan Koger, daughter of Henry Koger and Lucinda Thomas. Mr. J. R. Smith, her husband, is well connected. His grandfather William Morris, was one of the leading members of Mt. Bethel Methodist Church. Mr. Smith's uncle Benjamin Morris moved to Alabama and married a Miss Blair. Mr. Smith's aunt, Pattie Morris, married Daniel Price and moved to Kentucky. Mrs. Smith will be buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Martinsville.

THE HENRY BULLETIN, Fri., March 9, 1923, p. 4, col. 4. I would like to place my little grandson, Frank Raymond Keen, age 5 years, in a good home where he will be educated as a child of the family. He is a good, bright little boy. His mother is dead and his father has long been physically disabled. If interested, call at home of T. S. Smith on Gravely Street. A. F. Keen.
Ibid., Fri., June 26, 1925, page 1, col. 7 [edited]. Mr. A. Frank Keen, who for the last several years has been making his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Tom S. Smith on Clay Street, ended his life Wednesday morning about ten o’clock, when he emptied the whole load of a shot-gun into his body, the full load piercing the body near the heart. No clue to the motive for his tragic action ending his own life has been found unless it was the result of brooding over his ill health. Mr. Keen was about 70 years of age. He had been in the employ of the Lester Live Stock and Grain Co. for over 30 years, being the oldest employee of that company. One morning last week he complained of a slight
illness, and he went to his daughter’s home to rest. Since then he had been unable to do much work, and it is supposed that his ill health was responsible for this act. Mr. Keen is survived by two children, Mrs. Smith and Raymond Keen, both of Martinsville.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keen died in the hospital at Marion last Saturday and the body was brought to Martinsville on the train and taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. S. Notes for Grover Cleveland SMITH:
Bruce W. Locke:
There is only one Martinsville paper from 1909 which is on
microfilm, and that is the one dated July 23, 1909. I pulled the film and
made a complete copy of the news story for you. I also checked the index
to Henry County marriages for a Cleveland, Grover Cleveland and Grocer
Smith, but none were listed for the time frame involved. I was curious as
to the name of his wife. The name Grocer may have been a transcription
error in compiling the Periwinkle books. The tombstone pulls first had to
be made on note pads while standing in the cemetery, then transcribed to
note cards at another time, and finally, much later, transcribed again for
the books. It is likely that Grover Cleveland Smith was married in
another county in Virginia, but probably in or around Davy, West Virginia.
Thank you for writing - it is nice to know when someone makes a "find".
Very best wishes,
Bruce.
Here is the complete news story:
THE HENRY BULLETIN, Friday, July 23, 1909, page 5, col. 5. SHOT BY
MISTAKE. Cleveland Smith, a son of Mr. Jas. R. Smith of Martinsville, was
shot in the postoffice at Davy, W. Va. early Tuesday morning, through a
most unfortunate mistake. Some Italians in the neighborhood had been
giving a good deal of trouble and young Smith with three others were
guarding the office. As Tuesday morning was rather chilly, he, with one of
his companions, went inside the office to keep warm, the other guard not
knowing they were about the place, mistook them for burglars and fired,
killing Smith. The remains were brought to Martinsville Wednesday night
for interment. The funeral took place from the Christian Church at four
o'clock yesterday afternoon, Dr. J. P. McCabe at the Baptist Church
conducting the service, in the absence of the pastor, Mr. Hendershot. The
interment was in Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Smith leaves a wife and two small
children.

Hello,
Since the names Critz, Shelton and Koger are extremely commom in the Southside Virginia counties of Henry, Patrick and Pittsylvania-- I am surprised that I have had so much trouble with this one. I am beginning to think that some of the information in the obituary is less than accurate.

Notes for Thomas Shelton:
I have tentatively chosen Thomas the Saddler--not Thomas N. the Farmer as father of our Wm J. as I have not found the 1850 census for Thomas N. the Farmer to see if a William J is listed with him. Although, Thomas N. married Martha A. Critz May 1, 1835 Patrick Co., VA and this would fit with the statement that Wm J Shelton served under his uncle Major James Critz. Not that I have found yet that Martha had a brother, James Critz....Of course there is probably another Critz connection, Haman Critz lived next door to Thomas the Saddler... ....So, will need more info on the Thomas N. ...At any rate, I can't help but think both are related to each other.

5. MicajahShelton, born June 20, 1742.3
As noted previously, Reuben Shelton appears to have remained on the family land until 1770,when he sold to Henry Street.Norecord of Micajah has been discovered after May 4, 1762, when with Middlesexcourt approval he chose Ambrose Jeffreys as his guardian.4
Josiah Shelton, we think, may have gone to Lunenburg County where the Cumberland Parishtithe lists of 1769 through 1776 show a Josiah Shelton.1 In1782 Josiah Shelton was taxed in Charlotte County on 9 whites and 1 slave 2and in 1797 he left will in Halifax County, naming wife Elizabeth and 7others undoubtedly his children . Godfre Shelton, Absull** Shelton, JosiahShelton, Anne Clemments (wife of Benjamin Clemments), Ruthey Murphey, PatseyShelton and Elizabeth Shelton.3 GodfreyShelton had been on the Lunenburg tithe list of 1776, indented under Josiah, indicating that he had just turned 18.4 JosiahShelton (junior) married Fathy (Ruthy) Ford in Halifax on May 25, 1798. 5

Rockingham County did it's own indexing until the beginning of 1900.The 372 bonds that I listed were bonds that had been lost prior to the1944 index. Perhaps being lost in the Rockingham County Courthouse fireof 1906, some pilfered by descendants, and some accidentally discardedover the years. They left their native land of the Palitinate upon the Rhine and came to seek homes in which to rear their families in the New word. They took the oath of allegiance to Great Britain (George II). There were four brothers, Jacob, Nicholas, Joseph, and Peter.Jacob Koger, one of the four brothers, settled first in Pittsylvania (County), next he located in Augusta County, Virginia, where he accummulated much property. In 1762 he had settled in Henry County about 20 miles west of Martinsville. The land was hilly and well adapted to growing tobacco. The danger from Indian raids was great at that time and the family took refuge at times in the fort which was built three miles from his home.In 1782 he gave his son, Henry, the tract of land lying on both sides of Stone Creek. He died in 1783.
